The ELMED project, which would establish a 600 MW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine cable link between Sicily and Tunisia spanning approximately 200 kilometres, has reached a significant procurement milestone. In late June 2026, multiple independent outlets reported that Hitachi Energy had been awarded the contract to design and build the converter stations that form the core of the HVDC infrastructure. Zawya reported the contract value at approximately $876 million, while Hitachi Energy's own press release, issued jointly with Italian grid operator Terna and Tunisian counterpart STEG, cited a figure of approximately €770 million.
