Construction of Yaounde bypass

The Yaoundé bypass is listed under the Global Gateway Africa framework as a transport infrastructure project intended to relieve congestion in the Cameroonian capital by routing freight and transit traffic around the city, thereby improving logistics on the Kribi/Douala-Ndjamena corridor. The EU describes it as an 89-kilometre road with a stated strategic rationale, but the investment figure has not been made public through EU channels. No disbursements are recorded in the IATI Datastore and no matching project appears in the EIB's published project database, which are the most reliable indicators of actual financial commitment. At this stage, there is no confirmed EU money attached to this project in any independently verifiable form. The most substantive independent signal comes from a March 2025 report by Africa Business Plus suggesting the EIB was close to lending €180 million for the bypass. Africa Business Plus is not a Tier 1 or Tier 2 source, and this claim has not been corroborated by Reuters, AFP, Bloomberg or any other major wire. The EIB's own database contains no corresponding entry, which makes independent verification impossible at this point. The €180 million figure, if accurate, would represent only a portion of the total project cost: a June 2026 report from Business in Cameroon puts the overall bypass price tag at approximately $2.2 billion, with an Indian firm having reportedly offered a financing plan.
