Construction of Kakono Hydropower Plant

The Kakono Hydropower Plant is among the more substantively documented Global Gateway energy projects in Tanzania, though it remains firmly in early-stage development and independent verification of construction progress is absent. The project envisages an 88MW run-of-river plant on the Kagera River in northwestern Tanzania, paired with a fish pass and an associated transmission line intended to feed power into the national interconnected grid. The clearest financial milestone so far is a financing agreement announced in October 2023. TanzaniaInvest reported that Tanzania had secured €146 million in combined funding from the EU and the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) for the plant. Tanzania's Daily News, a state-affiliated outlet, quoted the combined EU and AFD contribution as equivalent to approximately 384.7 billion Tanzanian shillings.
