Mwache water project

The Mwache Multipurpose Dam is a long-running Kenyan infrastructure project designed to address chronic water shortages in Mombasa and provide irrigation capacity in adjacent Kwale County. Its inclusion in the Global Gateway Africa portfolio under the water pillar is notable given that the EU description categorises it under energy, a classification that does not align with the project's primary stated purpose of domestic water supply and irrigation. That mislabelling alone warrants caution when assessing the EU's framing of this initiative. The project predates Global Gateway by several years. Construction formally began in April 2023, according to trade publication Construction Review, with the dam located west of Mombasa on the Mwache River in Kwale County.
