About this data.
This tool uses bilateral FDI stock positions (end-of-year accumulated investment, not annual flows) from the Eurostat Balance of Payments dataset BOP_FDI6_POS, which reports EU member states' direct investment positions against counterpart economies worldwide. Data covers 2013–2024 and is denominated in millions of euros.
There are some coverage gaps. Not all EU member states report bilateral positions for every African country; where data is absent, investment may still exist but was not disclosed. For example, Austria and Malta do not report in this dataset at this level of detail.
Data may reflect the immediate counterpart, and not the ultimate investor. The data tracks where capital is legally domiciled, not where it ultimately originates. Countries such as the Netherlands and Luxembourg often appear large because many European companies route investment through holding structures in these jurisdictions. The underlying investment may originate from other EU economies.
